Lost UFOs that will never be finished department:

It was going to say "[Lastname]'s Amazing Diaper Bag (a division of Heward's Handy Haversacks)".

It is officially never, ever getting finished and is off The List forever.

Oh, and I'm also trying to finish a 50,000-word book.

For Detention this month, we're allowed to turn in Non-Rav crafts. When I got my iPhone last spring, my darling husband actually got me (from Far Overseas, in a language he doesn't know) some cross-stitchable iPhone covers. (Okay, the site is now in English!) I started doing a Teresa Wentzler border around the edge (from the free "Stretch" dragon pattern - which I've stitched a couple of times!) of one of them the second I got it.... and then got bored. Or distracted. Or something. Here's how it's looked for the last half-year or so:
Before

I got the stitching done for the edge, but not the backstitch - and as you can see, on the right side of the case, it's much easier to see the Celtic knotwork, since it's highlighted by backstitching. The left side, not so much.

Of course, finishing the border is one thing; figuring out what to put in the center is another. Originally, I'd wanted a sun/moon sort of celestial thing. The space I had left was 17w x 52h, which is really thin & tall. TW, however, has an amazing Renaissance Bookmark chart (free!) that I'd somehow missed. THE CENTER IS 17st wide! And if I just do a set of the rings - well, they're 51 st high. I'll just have an extra row up at the top near the camera. I am totally amazed that there was a TW that is so perfectly adapted to an iPhone cover. Then, it was just a case of finishing it.

Um. In case I hadn't mentioned it, it's a TERESA WENTZLER design. Even making modifications to discount half-stitches (not possible on the plastic grid of the case) and not using the exact colors she called for (tweeding: not going to work here!), there's still some intricate stuff going on here, and I don't care who you are, 884 stitches and a whole lot of backstitching isn't exactly a walk in the park!

Probably won't finish it, but at least there's a chance I will!

Free Day!

Sunday, I gave myself a Free Knitting Day, and came close to finishing my Hello Kitty Illusion Scarf. (There are going to be pictures in this post, and lots of 'em.) Here are the two sides, so you can see that each square will have a mirror-image reverse-negative on its back, as if I somehow managed to combine illusion knitting and double-knitting. Which, I admit, I'm hoping to fool at least one person into thinking I did (unlikely, but hey, it would be cool...).

And lots of little close-ups (you were warned there'd be photos)...

Here's a movie of it, just because. I really, really like the way it's turning out...

And then, seaming the sides. I decided to crochet (using pink) the sides together from the inside first.

I have one of those seams done, and about half of its corresponding outside seam. Yes, I really, REALLY want the two sides to stay (mostly) flat and lined up - thus, seaming nigh-unto-death.

I'm hoping to finish it up tonight - or at least this week. Yay! That'll be something Off The List (and, incidentally, the thing I'm turning in for this term's Headmistress' Challenge)!!

Starting the new year off right!

The State of The Knitted and Crocheted UFOs, start of 2011. This is what was on The List as of December 30, 2011. I managed to finish - or unravel - two more projects, so I ended the year at 38 WIPs (UNDER FORTY!! RESOLUTION ACHIEVED!!). I made a total of 114 projects in 2010, with a monthly average of 9.5 finishes. That's just amazing - not just that I got so much done, but that... no, really, it's amazing I got that much done. I started a MESS of projects in 2010 - 97, to be exact - and I STILL managed to get my overall WIP number down. I'm just amazed at myself, really!

What: Peacock Feather Beaded Scarf
Needs: TO BE FOUND. It's this tiny little ball of merino on tiny circular needles in a tiny bag, and it's lost. I'm hoping I'll find it, but it's really, truly possible that I may not.
Expected Time: Approximately 50-80 hours. It's superfine mohair, with beads. That's gonna slow ANYONE down.

What: Dragon Illusion Blanket
Needs: The Second Half Finished
Expected Time: Approximately 100-200 hours. Seriously. One "row" is actually four rows, each with (I think) over 250 stiches, and, it being a blanket, it's heavy. Really, really heavy. So it takes some doing.

What: Hello Kitty Illusion Scarf
Needs: Finish final HK block; carefully line up and sew back and front together, add fringe
Expected Time: Approximately five to six hours

What: "Block Eight" Castle Block
Needs: FINISHED 12/31/2010
Expected Time: N/A

What: Unfinished Serpentine Valentine Socks (was going to be November CoMC)
Needs:UNRAVELED 12/31/2010 - they just weren't working. Cankles and too-tight cast on!
Expected Time: N/A

What: Hearts Pi Shawl
Needs: A LOT. Like, TONS of stitches. Thousands and thousands of stitches. On little eensy-tiny needles, yet!
Expected Time: 200+ hours.

What: Advent Calendar Scarf
Needs: A LOT. Like, TONS of stitches. Thousands and thousands of stitches. On little eensy-tiny needles, yet!
Expected Time: 200+ hours.

You'll note, please, that there aren't ANY left-from-previous-years crocheted UFOs - I tend to finish my crochet projects. Mostly because they're far, far less grand in scope than my knitting!

And speaking of crochet projects - HPKCHC classes dropped on Saturday, so I started Charms. The assignment was to stalk a First Year student, find something in their batch of finished projects, and make one of them. The Hufflepuff I stalked had done a granny square baby blanket; since I've got a baby shower to attend in about two weeks, I opted for that. I just decided to make it a little, well, cooler than the average baby blanket. This is a granny square - WITH FLAMES. I've gone through one skein of black yarn and one yellow that this point; I need more yellow, and will probably pick up a second red while I'm at it.

I've also put in one OWL proposal, and started a second class. Also WITH FLAMES. (That's my January theme - make everything WITH FLAMES.) So, right now, I started the year with 38 WIPs, and right now, I'm at 40. That totally rocks!!!

Under 40!

So, just before midnight, clocking in at 39 WIPs... and here's my finished quilt block, as proof:

The top (larger) one I finished late last night/early this morning, and discovered my gauge was wonky (or I'd picked up the wrong needles or something), so today, I re-knit it smaller.

So, two quilt squares, bringing Total Things Knit for 2010 to 114. Which isn't bad. It's actually good, since I'm signed up for "111 in 2011"....

Happy New Year!!

LastDay

I'm probably going to make it under 40 UFOs/WIPs/Projects Going At Once this year... and just barely. As I write this on Thursday (anticipating lack of internet on Friday, when this will post), I have exactly 40 projects on The List, and one is getting close to finished. It's the Quilt Block from the Super-Mysterious Ghost of Slytherins Past that I roped myself into last term. I really, really should have it finished now; I've knit enough rows. I've also frogged about half that number, leaving me about 2/3 of the way to the finish line as of the end of lunch yesterday. To wit:

I've got help, of course. Meet my new friend, Nesbit (Nessie for short. Yes, we know "Nessie" is just as long as "Nesbit", but that's what she likes to be called.) She violates my household's Rule of Plush (get a New Stuffed Plush Critter, lose an old stuffed plush critter), so she actually lives in my backpack for now, which is TOTALLY not my house.

She's a lot like a cat, I've discovered: she likes curling up and sitting on whatever it is I'm trying to read or knit. At least she doesn't chase yarn balls... yet. Anyway, I'm hoping to finish (or, if it's NOW, hoping I have already finished) this quilt square, which will put me at 39 UFOs for the beginning of 2011. If I can manage any sort of internet access, I'll attempt an update post later in the day!

Nesbit (and I ) wishes you a Very Happy New Year!!

NOT Wizard Chess

So, as it turns out, one can only post 10 points worth of stuff for Wizard Chess to begin with - not Post All The Things, and then try to finish 10 points' worth. Oh well - 10 points isn't enough pressure to actually make me do anything. So, I must create MY OWN PRESSURE!!!

Why yes, I am a tad deadline-driven. Why do you ask?

Anyway, here's the CraftyGryphon List of Potential December Finishes. Each is worth "one EX point" - aka each thing finished is a thing off The List. Remember The List?
Already On The List (Added Last Term):
Thanksgiving Bunny
Christmas Jackelope
New Year's Bunny
Tilting Tardis Shrug
Serpentine Valentine Socks

Newly Added To The List:
Pi Hearts Shawl
Block Eight Castle Blanket Block

Been On The List So Long It's Not Funny Anymore:
Hello Kitty Scarf
Stripe #4 of the Monster Yarn Project
Dragon Illusion Blanket #2
Beaded Mohair Peacock Scarf (still missing, btw)

About To Be Added:
TKGA Level I Master Hand Knitting, take #2
OWL Hat
Trilobite toy
Swatching for Muggle Studies OWL (Whistler Sweater)
Swatching for Ancient Runes OWL (Peacock Buffet Scarf/Table Runner)
There. That's potentially 11 things OFF THE LIST (swatches don't count), which would actually bring me (gasp!!!) into the THIRTIES. Yes, I could actually have UNDER 40 UFOs at the start of 2011!!

Here's my Progress On Things over the weekend:

Pi Hearts Shawl - already out to the "288-stitch" part - just 50 rows, and I'll be up to the 576-stitch rows, and then, heck, I'll be done! (Note the sarcasm. Why did I start something so complicated to "relax"? You don't wanna know how often I've had to frog a row. Thank heavens for stich markers and row counters!!)

A pretty little ball of mohair/viscose Schulana Mosco followed me home yesterday. It's going to be a snowflake-ish smoke ring mobius. I'm cheating the mobius-ness, but since I've gotten really good at grafting things together, and I've figured out how to stage the reversed-side repeats, it should go together, er, seamlessly. Hope to have it done by the end of the week, as it's gotten COLD out.

Yeah. Respond to The List by adding to it... that's how I roll!

Wizard Chess Tournament!

This announcement went up yesterday at Hogwarts!
For all Students spending their holiday break at Hogwarts we are having a Wizard’s Chess Tournament.
Players choose WIPs they’d like to finish and give them points based on how hard/much work it will be to finish them.
Pawns - 1
Rooks - 2
Knights/Bishops - 4
King/Queen - 5
Any combination of pieces up to a total of 10 points. Players with the most points (for completed WIPs) will be entered into a drawing for a prize.

Before December 10th, create a post listing: your WIPs, before pics, and what piece they represent.
To turn in finished WIPs for points: post pictures of your completed WIPs and a running total of your current score.

Tournament runs until 12:00 noon December 31st POT. (cut off is early because no one should be spending New Years Eve knitting WIPs) All WIPs are welcome. Standard Ravelry crafts (knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning)
Examples of each – these are just guidelines; you are the best judge of how much work is left to complete your WIP.
Pawns – This should be a little bit of work (an hour or two): kitchenering sock toes, weaving in ends or sewing on buttons
Rooks – This should be more than just tucking in a few ends (two to five crafting hours): sewing up a sweater, weaving in ends on a fair isle sweater (cause that’s a LOT of ends)
Knights/Bishops – This should be a fairly substantial amount of work (five to ten crafting hours): finishing the dreaded second sock, second mitten, button bands on a cardigan
King/Queen – This should be a lot of work (more than 10 hours): finishing knitting on a sweater (at least sleeves left), edging for lace shawl
Well, since you've probably figured out I'm motivated by points, here's what I put in for the Tournament:

CraftyGryphon, Slytherin, about-to-be-Third Year - WIZARD CHESS. Calling all my likely possible points; we'll see how many I actually end up with!

Expected Time: **WEEKS.** If I actually pull this off in a month, I'll be very sad I didn't save it for a class next term!

(The fact that this list seems reasonable to me right now probably explains how I've Ultimate Quested two terms in a row.)

The List, October 2010

Someone over in Hufflepuff House started a "stash" thread, which I was invited (thanks, Steph!) to join. It got me thinking about The List, that magical giant spreadsheet I use to track things started, finished, and just sort of sitting there in any given year. I started The List back in 2001 (at least that's the earliest iteration I can find), and each January 1, I get a fresh start. The Ultimate (and possibly unreachable) goal is to get my works in progress into the SINGLE digits. Under TEN. Yeah, I know, not for a long time. But for 2010, the goal is to get the number of items on The List under 40... and that could happen. Stats for the year: projects started and finished: 74; projects finished total, 83; projects started and not finished, 6. I have a really, REALLY long commute, and have decided housework is a waste of time - that's how I manage so much crafting time.

So, here it is. The List, as it stands at the end of October, 2010, all 47 items-in-progress. As you can see, I tend to cling to projects once I've started them. That needs to change. There are some things on this list that I'm never going to finish, and I need to just Let Them Go. (This is different from the ones I can't find; they'll turn up. Possibly when I start getting rid of the other, never-to-be-completed, projects.) Some aren't worth finding new homes for; some I'll give away via the Ravelry groups for the associated "started - anyone want to finish?" threads. But here's the list, right now. (Any photos are the most recent ones I could find on Photobucket; most projects are beyond the point in the photo.)

Cross-Stitch Projects: 25 Year
Started
DesignerPlan
"Castle Sampler"1992Teresa WentzlerFinish. I bought all the floss again for Ancient Ruins over the summer, and I have everything I need - except the time.
"Arcadian Angel"1993MarBek/SerendipityOne of a set of four, this is the "summer" angel. Spring is done, and I have the kits for autumn and winter. They're lovely, so this will get finished.
"Dreamcatchers II"1993Design WorksThis only has about four hours left, but it's NASTY counting and a ton of backstitch. I've finished a companion piece already, and have another related kit in the wings. So, this, too, will get finished.
"Day"1994Teresa WentzlerI have "Night", too. It's a TW; the border is done, the rest will be. Someday.
"Mysterious Spirit Woman"1994Candy & CoI really like this image - but I've so far changed all the colors in it, reworked several things... and I still have just a bit of it finished. This one will be DISCARDED, and the chart kept in the archives.
"Waiting for Ships/Mermaid of the Pearls"1995MiribiliaThis is a 4'x4' piece when finished, and finished it will be. Someday. I think I'm most of the way through the WfS mermaid, and have about 1/3 of the tail of MotP done. And, of course, I'm changing the hair on one and the face on the other to make it seem that they're running from danger. (Why, I'm not sure; the idea appealed to me when I started stitching.)
English Knot Garden1996Lake District DesignsThe first kit I bought at a Cross Stitch Show. I'm really getting close to this one being done; I need to finish it before the end of 2011.
"Unicorn" ("Night Watch")1996Teresa Wentzler32-count black linen AND it's a TW. My husband picked it out, and I'll do it someday - but NOT on 32-count black linen. DISCARD.
"Autumn Queen"1997MiribiliaI need to find yellows I like for her skirt and olive greens I like for her cloak; she's about 4/5 finished at this point, and re-done in autumn colors (reds and oranges and golds!)
"Angel of Christmas"1997JannlynI liked this enough that I accidentally bought it twice (gave the spare to a friend long ago)... and yet it still isn't finished a decade later. I'm on the fence with this one.
"Peacock Tapestry"1998Teresa WentzlerI think I've got one corner of this done - but it counts as started. It's my favorite of her designs, so it'll get done someday!
Water Dragon (from BFF)1998JannLynI think I have most of the dragon done at this point, and I'm working on the buildings. It's a lot of olive green, but it's cool, so I'll finish it.
Autumn Sampler - Twisted Threads OCSJ class2001Twisted ThreadsThis is a very tiny sampler - and has been lost in my house for quite some time now. If I find it, I'll finish it - possibly as a needle roll.
"Abundant Acorns"2001Sweetheart TreeI love acorn motifs, and I love Sweetheart Tree designs, so this really should be done by now - but every time I pick it up to work on it, I lose interest quickly. On the fence on this one.
Sanctuary/Drawn Thread2003Drawn ThreadI started this as part of a stitch-along, and have about 5/6 of it finished. Once again, it's lost in my house...
Pocahontas "Proud Princess"2003DisneyOne of two Pocahontas kits I'm doing (I own four); I think I'm down to the border on this one.
Guenivere2005MarBek/SerendipityI've started this chart twice. There's not a lot left, I just need to finish the darned thing. (It's on some gold sparkly cloth that's really pretty, too!)
Tiffany Wisteria Window (1)2005Cross My HeartAfter a lot of thinking... I don't really like this chart as much as I thought I did, and I've got the Oyster Bay window chart now. DISCARD.
"Once Upon a Time" (The Fairy20s Secret Love)2005Passione RiccamoWedding Sampler for my BFF on some lovely hand-painted cloth. I need to finish it!
Pocahontas "Beautiful Braids"2006BucillaI think this one is really close to done, too - I've done Meeko (the raccoon) and the border; I just need to stitch the girl.
Tiffany Wisteria Window (2)2006Barbara ThompsonThis has been an on-and-off carry around project the last few months, and it's getting closer and closer to being finished. Good chance I'll manage it in 2010.
Small but Ferocious Gryphon2008 Arelate StudioThis is me having fun and combining two Arelate Studios charts into one, with the idea that it'll look like an illuminated manuscript page when finished. Single-thread gold crosses take FOREVER because the thread keeps snagging on itslef. That's why it's not done yet.
VS 12 Days of Christmas Bellpull2008Victoria SamplerIt's Victoria Sampler. It's Twelve Days. I Took the Cyberclass, then fell behind... but I have all my instructions. I'm on the Three French Hens, but this will get finished.
Williamsburg "The Chase" Sampler2009Mary Starker/Elsa WilliamsTechnically, this is off the list at present. I need to take the thread out of the original stamped cross stitch fabric, iron same, and fold it gently for preservation on the back of the finished new one. I have a sheet of 32-ct linen that I'll be working two over two instead, but I haven't started it yet.
Wicked Necklace2010Primitive NeedleThe current carry-around; likely done by the end of November 2010
Cross-Stitch Quilt/Set Projects: 3
"MS 2000"2000Various DesignersThis was a design-it-as-a-group project, where several bands for each month (with additions for birthdays and anniversaries and other events) were presented, and everyone could choose their own. I believe I'm working on July (with a birthday band between March and April, and Anniversary between June and July). Someday, it will be finished.
Eight "Joy" Ornaments (JCS Ornament issue2006Sweetheart TreeI started making these for my friends for christmas in 2006. With the year on them. At this point, when I find them, I'm sending them out. My friends know about the list, and will understand!!
Six Williamsburg Mini Ornaments2007Ronnie RoweI love Ronnie Rowe's stuff; I've got all his pen-and-ink designs. These will get done.
Latch Hook Projects: 1
Lounging Leopard Rug1996???I don't know if I have the rug yarn for this any more. If it doesn't turn up by the end of 2011, that's the end of this one.
Crochet Projects: 0
Knitted Projects: 6
Peacock Scarf2007CJ BagariaThis is beautiful Alchemy yarn, with iridescent beads and a peacock-feather pattern I invented. As it's one tiny ball of yarn and a vial of beads, it's a tiny, tiny project. It's been lost for a few years; I'm hoping it will come to light, because I do intend to finish it.
Dragon Illusion Blanket (II)2009CJ BagariaAt this point, I'm hoping I hit the halfway point of this monster by the end of 2011. It's HUGE. If I finish it, though, I'm totally selling the patter, because it's AWESOME.
Hello Kitty Illusion Scarf2010Alana Blewitt/CJ BagariaI think I have three blocks left on this. Possible 2010 finish.
Yarn on Thursday: Stitch Edition Blanket2010CJ BagariaI'm halfway through the stitch directory I'm using for this project, and I will finish. HPKCHC is slowing me down, though!!
2HPKCHC - Transfiguration - Tilting Tardis2010CJ BagariaAnother possible 2010 finish; the body and sleeves are done, I just need to figure out what I'm doing for the ribbing, and whether or not I'm putting a high collar on it.
2HPKCHC - Herbology Owl - Sweater2010E.J. Slayton/CJ BagariaDone before Thanksgiving 2010 Or Else.
Quilting Projects: 7
September 11 Patriotic Shoo-Fly Quiltlet2001CJ BagariaAll the piecing is done, I just need to quilt six more of the 12 blocks. This needs to be done!
Optical Illusion Squares Quilt2004CJ BagariaQuilt top is done. I just need ot put it with its bunting and backing and bind it. Originally, I was going to quilt it; at this point, I'm just going to tie it because I want it finished.
Quilt Block Exchange Quilt2004VariousI did a quilt block exchange in (I guess) 2004, and got some lovely squares. Not everything was done to the specified size, however, so a lot of work re-sizing things with brightly-colored strips needs to be done. It'll happen. Someday.
Block-Of-The-Month/ Red, Green, Gold2005Jo-Ann FabricsI think I pieced half of one block; this is coming off the list until I have time to work on the whole thing. "DISCARDED."
Blue Triangles Quilt2005CJ BagariaI cut a jillion triangles in various shades of white-on-blue to blue-on-white, and then pieced them together by hand. It's pretty wonky-looking. DISCARD.
"Northwoods Challenge" Quilt2006CJ BagariaI was going to enter this in one of the Keepsake Quilting challenges; I think it would've rocked. All the pieces are cut out; I just need to do the piecing and quilting. Will happen, just not anytime soon.
A Very Broncos Christmas2006CJ BagariaA bargello strip quilt of my own design, to get me used to my sewing machine. I believe all my strips are pieced at this point, I just need to put the strips together (and then to the rest of it). Will happen. Someday.
Canvaswork: 5
"Fishing Pillow" (for Dad)1999BucillaI've tried to do this thing TWICE, keep running out of yarn, and other ugliness. I think I'll make something that my dad would actually appreciate instead (he's not really a throw-pillow sort of guy). DISCARD.
"Partridge in a Pear Tree" stocking2002BucillaI'm allergic to the black wool used for the background - or at least I was. I might not be so much any more - and it's just the background that needs doing now. I should finish this.
Dragonfly Window2005Lisa BolgerI love, love, love Lisa Bolger's designs. This is all worked in cotton, since when I got it, I was reacting poorly to needlework wool. I was trying to come up with different textures for each part, and got stuck on the leaves. I've since decided that they'll be done, flat out, in wool, since I can deal with it now. This will get finished.
Bargello Flames Bag2005CJ BagariaI had a brilliant idea for this canvas, which is 2'x2'. It's never going to work. DISCARD.
Stained Glass Peacock Kit2007DimensionsAnnoying, since it was hard to track down, didn't come with the main blue color, and is printed slightly off-kilter. Will finish it thought, because it's (a) a peacock and (b) could actually be stained glass.
Sewing Projects: 0

Yeah, I think I'll definitely let some of these things go - and try to finish up the rest. I'll try to find everything by the end of November (because I'll want a break from NaNoWriMo, and cleaning out the stash room is equivalent to vacuuming the cat as "things to do to not deal with writer's block"), and knock things off the list as I find them. I'm also going to attempt to get a "current" photo of everything on The List, too. That should be... um... an adventure!!

Forget-Me-Not is Finished!

Today, I've got a finish for you! This is Shui Kuen Kozinski's "Forget-Me-Not" lace shawl (from Elann.com), done in a mystery soft mohair for most of it, and about six inches in Kid Seta that mostly matched. I started this shawl in 2008, according to The List - July 29, 2008, according to Ravelry. (I love Ravelry!!) Finished it on the 24th of last month, and pulled out the pins Wednesday evening, with photos taken early this morning. (Photography Hint: lace with a flash just before sunrise against black clothing looks pretty danged good.)

Model chosen because she was wearing black,
which makes everything show up well!

Of course, blocking it took forever - and, since it was 6' along the edge, the garage again. I ran out of ball-head pins, and wound up using lace pins for over half of it. Tiny, sharp little lace pins. Which didn't much like the mohair, but I made it work.

halfway there...

Of course, I spotted a space where there was a hole that needed repair - this stuff was incredibly fiddly to work with! Luckily, it repaired just fine. *Phew!*

And, since I was working on this for a bit, if you click through on this picture, there's some pretty pink wallpaper for you, if you like pretty pink lace wallpaper.

Since I finished the knitting *before* classes started, this actually brought my UFO number down to 45 for a brief, shining moment. Woohoooo!!
