Offset Drop-Stitch Scarf

I made this little scarf in August from one ball of some really pretty thing (Knit Go Craft Bamboo Soft Bamboo Cotton Silk, according to my Ravelry project page). It's offset columns of drop stitches, which due to the nubbiness of the yarn actually worked WONDERFULLY once the stitches were dropped. Which, due to the nubbiness of the yarn, was a little tricky in spots, but it *did* work.


I was just winging it with the pattern; if I find another nubby yarn, I'll make another, pay attention, and get a pattern written up. (I really need to start writing patterns when I'm winging it in the first place!)

Things at my parents' house

Since it's Groundhog Day... wait, what do you mean it's February 3? It seems like it was the 2nd forever... anyway, it's a good time to look into the past a bit. Since I was at my parents' house this past weekend, I took some photos of stuff I'd done in ages past. I think showing off your daughter's needlework is probably the grown-up version of pictures I drew stuck on the fridge...

My first and only bit of successful crewel, originally done for my mom's mom back in the 80s. I framed it myself, too, and was very proud of it.


First of a set of four I started in law school. I finished this one (Spring), and I'm about halfway done with the second one (Summer). I've been out of law school for quite a while.


Done when I first moved back east (after aforementioned law school), and one of my first samplers. Mom totally stole it, but that's OK.

I'm going to guess that the cross-stitch bug started being replaced by the knitting bug not too long thereafter. I have finished some cross-stitch in the last few years, but it's mostly things I started earlier. I should pick one or two things and try to get some more cross stitch off The List!

My first - and only - weaving!

I made this in 1976, when I was just a little girl, for the US Bicentennial. Other than cotton-loop potholders (which I think everyone makes at some point), I believe it’s the only weaving I’ve ever done.


I made it up as I went; it’s somewhat scratchy acrylic yarn, but I was very, VERY proud of it. I seem, vaguely, to remember that I actually made my own cardboard-box loom to do it, too!


I’m going through my house, and getting rid of Things. Thanks to the internet, I can save photos of the Things in several places, thus ensuring I’ll remember them, without actually having to KEEP them.

12 in 12

So, according to Ravelry (which doesn't count cross stitch, quilting, canvas or hardanger, so no, I didn't get The List down super-far, don't worry), I have twelve WIPs. WIPs are things that I actually intend to finish at some point, as opposed to UFOs, which I have finally realized means I will NOT finish them. (The List has both right now; it will be pruned of UFOs for the new year.) Anyway, here are my Ravelry WIPs:


They're presented in order of "happiness" - which should probably also be updated, since by "happiness", my Evenstar should be dead last. (I am loathing knit-on beaded edging and only keeping going because the yarn is soooo fluffy and the beads are soooo pretty and I WANT THAT SHAWL.)

As pictured left to right, top to botttom, the items are as follows:

1. The 2011 Advent Calendar Scarf, Part 1. I started this on December 1 this year, so it hasn't been a WIP for long. Since I'm doing it with MadTosh Merino Light, 91 stitches and 12 days of pattern will actually get me a shawl. This is probably the closest item to being finished. It will be saved for the OWL frenzy that is March.
2. Slytherin Crest Bag. The knitting is done, the blocking is done. I have the hardware, the straps, and the canvas for the lining. I have zippers and more canvas for pockets. I just have to actually (*shudder*) SEW the thing together. February is a short month with a long weekend - I think I'll save this for then.
3. Ancient Runes OWL: Pretty as a Peacock Shawl. I actually have to frog back through the first set of peacock feathers, which is what killed this shawl getting finished in the first place. And (oh, joy!) I don't think there's a lifeline anywhere in the thing. (I have learned better since!) Whereabouts currently unknown; I'll keep this for August, in-between terms, since it's silk and not *super* warm.
4. Swiss Cheese Scarf. A pleasant little mindless something to carry around with everything else. Also to be saved for an end of term - preferably one where I'm traveling - like July.
5. Astronomy OWL: Evenstar Shawl. It's JUST the edging left. The beaded edging. Still, I think I've got a shot at finishing it in a week or two of knitting. Since it's very warm, it needs a winter midterm - either April this year, or hold until December.
6. Pullover WITH FLAMES. About half the flames are done. I just need to rework the neck (I hate the way it looks now) and worry about the sleeves. Except for the WITH FLAMES areas, it's simple stockinette, so it goes fast when I'm actually knitting.
7. The 2010 Advent Calendar Scarf. Whereabouts currently unknown, and I think I only have about seven days done. This one should be a midterm project, too... and I think I just ran out of midterms.
8. EZ 100th Anniversary Pi Hearts Shawl. This is a big shawl; I think I just kicked up to the 560-stitch rows. It's working well, though, and the Neighborhood Fiber Company silk is a pleasure. It's a pretty simple pattern, despite the size of what's left; I think I can do this during regular term.
9. Yarn on Thursdays: Stitch Edition Blanket. I'm going through (or was going through, I enrolled in the HPKCHC) the entire Knitting on the Net Stitch Directory. I got through 19 weeks of my project in 2010/2011, and 67 stitches on the list. For sanity, I think I'll call "finished" for the blanket at stitch 77, which should be two more panels on the blanket, which should make it queen-sized/futon sized. The rest of the stitches will be handled as sampler pillows for the colorwork/mosaic stuff and the rest in a nice little lap-sized throw. But finished for this is the last ten stitches in part II of the list. Should be able to knock this out during term.
10. Dragon Illusion Blanket. OY. I started this a long, long time ago, before I really had a grasp on what either "287 st/row" or "every row in illusion knitting is actually four rows" meant. I'm almost to the halfway point; I'm thinking if I can get five (really 20) rows a month, I might have it done by the end of the year sometime. And 20 rows of this thing is about all I can manage before it gets exiled again.
11. Peacock Feather Beaded Scarf. This isn't just "whereabouts unknown"; it's so small - just a tiny ball of merino and some beads - that I think it may actually have been accidentally thrown out. If I haven't found it by December 2012, it'll officially come off The List and my Rav page as "forever frogged".
12. History of Magic OWL: Peacock Fillet Crochet Tablecloth. I want this thing done. IT FREAKING TAKES FOREVER. It's a tiny hook. It's tiny thread. BUT IT IS SO PRETTY! I think this will be another "work about ten rows, put it down for a month" projects.

So, according to the above, I want to finish the twelve items in the following order, more or less. Any of the larger items (tablecloth, illusion blanket) will get worked on well before the month they're due - heck, all of them might be - so this is just a "hey, if I haven't started finishing this yet, I really should" list :

Yeah, that should keep me busy this year. Not even counting the upcoming 54 classes, three BROOMs, three OWLs, Quidditch, Challenges, and other events!!

Almost Sorting-Time

Sorting at HPKCHC doesn't begin for another week or so (I think), but I'm getting ready. I'm hoping, of course, to sort Slytherin again (I mean, really. Half my real-life wardrobe has skewed green and silver at this point), so I got a little icon ready to go:


And yes, I'm playing LEGO Harry Potter on my phone. I'm having all sorts of fun running back through Freeplay mode and getting all the things I missed, while I'm still going through Goblet of Fire. (I am REALLY not a fan of the actual Fire Task with the dragon, despite the fun I had at the HPKCHC Tri-Wizard Tournament last term.)

During Winter Break (aka December), there's a Yule Cat and Yule Dog being run (no points involved, just fun). Yule Cat is finish making a wearable item; Yule Dog is finish making a nonwearable. Any craft, whatever you want, just finish up something. For Yule Dog, I'm considering these:

The Wisteria Window that I've been working on since... 2006? Maybe? It's fairly close to finished, I think I'm down to just the purple and green leaves on the center bunch (and then, of course, the backstitching). This was meant to be an insert in a totebag long, long ago. I'm not sure where the cloth for said bag went - so I'm just gonna call this one "done" when the stitching is finished...
Then there's this happy little thing, a tiny Michael Powell kit I got back when Scarlet Thread still had a storefront. I'm going to change the text to "Love you!", and I lost the actual chart, so I'm winging it off a big blown-up copy of the cover photo. Hopefully I'll figure it out:


Of course, with the Advent Scarf and trying to get more of my OWL finished, it's going to be interesting. And I'm pretty sure I still have some Christmas Knitting to do....

Oh, and I'm also trying to finish a 50,000-word book.

For Detention this month, we're allowed to turn in Non-Rav crafts. When I got my iPhone last spring, my darling husband actually got me (from Far Overseas, in a language he doesn't know) some cross-stitchable iPhone covers. (Okay, the site is now in English!) I started doing a Teresa Wentzler border around the edge (from the free "Stretch" dragon pattern - which I've stitched a couple of times!) of one of them the second I got it.... and then got bored. Or distracted. Or something. Here's how it's looked for the last half-year or so:

I got the stitching done for the edge, but not the backstitch - and as you can see, on the right side of the case, it's much easier to see the Celtic knotwork, since it's highlighted by backstitching. The left side, not so much.

Of course, finishing the border is one thing; figuring out what to put in the center is another. Originally, I'd wanted a sun/moon sort of celestial thing. The space I had left was 17w x 52h, which is really thin & tall. TW, however, has an amazing Renaissance Bookmark chart (free!) that I'd somehow missed. THE CENTER IS 17st wide! And if I just do a set of the rings - well, they're 51 st high. I'll just have an extra row up at the top near the camera. I am totally amazed that there was a TW that is so perfectly adapted to an iPhone cover. Then, it was just a case of finishing it.

Um. In case I hadn't mentioned it, it's a TERESA WENTZLER design. Even making modifications to discount half-stitches (not possible on the plastic grid of the case) and not using the exact colors she called for (tweeding: not going to work here!), there's still some intricate stuff going on here, and I don't care who you are, 884 stitches and a whole lot of backstitching isn't exactly a walk in the park!

Probably won't finish it, but at least there's a chance I will!

Another finish

Also due to the commuting trauma last week (and not actually having cast on my actual Rogue hoodie until Tuesday evening - AFTER the commute), I was able to finish a lovely shawl I started back in April during the DC Yarn Crawl.


It's Color Changing Cotton, and I used all but three yards of it.


I also really like the lattice texture - it's just the "Nancy" part of the Nancy & Judy shawl on Ravelry; I'll be using it again in something-or-other!

New Term Starts Tomorrow!!

First, I got sorted into Slytherin for my Fifth Year. Yay!!

Second, I'm a Middle Snake in the Black Adder Nest again - More Yay!!

Third, I was going to be somewhat sane with my crafting this term, really I was. I picked a complicated OWL, figured out I'd make a sweater for my BROOM, and do the minimum classes and quidditch. And then THIS got posted:

I'm not signing up to CRAFT ALL THE THINGS, but I'm probably going to try to do so anyway. I see a lot of tiny projects in my future!!

Fourth, let us say a fond farewell to the projects that will be fodder for Detention later in the term, upon which I will no longer have time to work due to OWL, BROOM, Quidditch, Headmistress's Challenge, and six-to-eight classes a month. First is my Dobby's Sunset Birch Leaf Shawl, which is probably a day or two out from being finished, so I may be able to pull off detention credit early.




Then, there's my Nancy & Judy shawl that only uses the Nancy pattern. I've made it to the second to last color change (FINALLY). The third-to-last change took 12 rows, so this one should take about ten, then there should be about five of pattern (or to a logical stopping point) then a garter-stitch edge.


I've actually done really well in August with getting projects I've started Off The List. Three shawls finished in August alone - that's pretty darned good for me!!

449 Days Ago...

Finished something! The Double-Sided Reverse-Negative Hello Kitty Illusion Scarf is FINISHED! This was my "fun, whimiscal knit to start 2010" - started it on the first of January last year, and finished it on Saturday. That's 449 days, kids. For a scarf. Although there's a perfectly rational reason for a scarf to take a year, two months and twenty-five days to knit - because it was really TWO scarves, and each of them was an illusion scarf. That had to be reverse-negative mirror images of each other. And it worked - here's my proof:


Being several layers of non-breathable acrylic, this scarf is quite heavy - and it's WARM. Which, as it turned out, was necessary - suddenly, it's winter here again!


So, scarf is finished, and it's a "real" item off the list. (And I'm turning it in as my Headmistress' Challenge for this term, too, which was the *real* incentive to finish it up once and for all!)

And here's that turn-in, just because...

Dear Self of January 1, 2010: **Don't do it.** Yes, you know you want to cast on that "whimsical" little Hello Kitty scarf you found a few years back on Ravelry. Yes, you've got pink and black yarn screaming out to become that scarf. The problem with you, though, is that you have "ideas" to "improve" perfectly good patterns.

I know you. You're going to decide that the Hello Kitty and Flower panels in the original pattern, aren't enough, and you're going to design a Happy Star and Happy heart to go with them. And then, about halfway through (or close to what SHOULD have been the end of the new, extended scarf), you'll decide that Illusion Scarf Backs are ugly, and wouldn't it be so much prettier if you just made a back to the scarf? Which, of course, could look like the front. Except... it would be so much cooler if you flipped the images and reversed the colors.

Okay, yes, that does look INCREDIBLY cool when laid out like that. But, Past Self, do you see the problem? DO YOU?? Well, let me help. Here is the scarf, finished, four hundred and forty-NINE days later. (And yes, you did grow out your hair, and yes, you have lost weight.)

Now do you see the problem? You've got a nice, heavy pink and black striped scarf. The illusion may be visible, from time to time, on one side or the other. BUT NO ONE SEEING IT FINISHED WILL EVER REALIZE HOW COOL IT IS. Seriously. If you're going to put that sort of effort into something, make sure people can see it, okay?

It's not like you know you're about to find a really cool group of folks running amok in an old castle somewhere in England. (You do, by the way. It's called "Hogwarts." Yes, like that Hogwarts. Never mind that right now.) You're just trying to knit something fun. I get that. Fun is good.

So, instead, how 'bout you cast on that nice Henry VIII Alice Starmore sweater you've been thinking about?

Just consider it.

Why yes, I am wearing the lovely green sweater I made myself.

First - Happy St. Patrick's Day!


Yes, I'm wearing green today. I just happen to have a lovely Celtic-cabled Kelly green sweater (aka my Herbology OWL)...!

Next, the progess of things. When last we saw my version of Barbara Thompson's Tiffany Window - Wisteria, it looked like this:


I've been carrying it around the past three days, and I swear I've made progress, although even *I* almost can't tell. While this is going to be lovely when it's finished, I started it when Scarlet Thread was still on Main Street in Vienna... and that was a while ago. For whatever reason, for a small piece, it's taking forever, and it's tricky to work on. (Okay, some of that is my fault; I added all the metallics to make it sparkly, and they're a bear to work.) Here it is today:


I think the left panel is done, the right is almost done; that means the inside panel is what I've got to finish up. With, of course, mostly metallicks. **Headdesk** Oh well, at least it's closer to done than it was!

And, since I'm burned out on Things I Should Be Working On, I started a little Michael Powell kit I picked up (also at Scarlet Thread). It's been staring at me from the sideboard for about a year now, so I finally caved.

Free Day!

Sunday, I gave myself a Free Knitting Day, and came close to finishing my Hello Kitty Illusion Scarf. (There are going to be pictures in this post, and lots of 'em.) Here are the two sides, so you can see that each square will have a mirror-image reverse-negative on its back, as if I somehow managed to combine illusion knitting and double-knitting. Which, I admit, I'm hoping to fool at least one person into thinking I did (unlikely, but hey, it would be cool...).


And lots of little close-ups (you were warned there'd be photos)...








Here's a movie of it, just because. I really, really like the way it's turning out...


And then, seaming the sides. I decided to crochet (using pink) the sides together from the inside first.


I have one of those seams done, and about half of its corresponding outside seam. Yes, I really, REALLY want the two sides to stay (mostly) flat and lined up - thus, seaming nigh-unto-death.


I'm hoping to finish it up tonight - or at least this week. Yay! That'll be something Off The List (and, incidentally, the thing I'm turning in for this term's Headmistress' Challenge)!!

NOT Wizard Chess

So, as it turns out, one can only post 10 points worth of stuff for Wizard Chess to begin with - not Post All The Things, and then try to finish 10 points' worth. Oh well - 10 points isn't enough pressure to actually make me do anything. So, I must create MY OWN PRESSURE!!!

Pi Hearts Shawl - already out to the "288-stitch" part - just 50 rows, and I'll be up to the 576-stitch rows, and then, heck, I'll be done! (Note the sarcasm. Why did I start something so complicated to "relax"? You don't wanna know how often I've had to frog a row. Thank heavens for stich markers and row counters!!)


A pretty little ball of mohair/viscose Schulana Mosco followed me home yesterday. It's going to be a snowflake-ish smoke ring mobius. I'm cheating the mobius-ness, but since I've gotten really good at grafting things together, and I've figured out how to stage the reversed-side repeats, it should go together, er, seamlessly. Hope to have it done by the end of the week, as it's gotten COLD out.

Wizard Chess Tournament!

This announcement went up yesterday at Hogwarts!

For all Students spending their holiday break at Hogwarts we are having a Wizard’s Chess Tournament.
Players choose WIPs they’d like to finish and give them points based on how hard/much work it will be to finish them.

Pawns - 1
Rooks - 2
Knights/Bishops - 4
King/Queen - 5

Any combination of pieces up to a total of 10 points. Players with the most points (for completed WIPs) will be entered into a drawing for a prize.

Before December 10th, create a post listing: your WIPs, before pics, and what piece they represent.
To turn in finished WIPs for points: post pictures of your completed WIPs and a running total of your current score.

Tournament runs until 12:00 noon December 31st POT. (cut off is early because no one should be spending New Years Eve knitting WIPs) All WIPs are welcome. Standard Ravelry crafts (knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning)
Examples of each – these are just guidelines; you are the best judge of how much work is left to complete your WIP.
Pawns – This should be a little bit of work (an hour or two): kitchenering sock toes, weaving in ends or sewing on buttons
Rooks – This should be more than just tucking in a few ends (two to five crafting hours): sewing up a sweater, weaving in ends on a fair isle sweater (cause that’s a LOT of ends)
Knights/Bishops – This should be a fairly substantial amount of work (five to ten crafting hours): finishing the dreaded second sock, second mitten, button bands on a cardigan
King/Queen – This should be a lot of work (more than 10 hours): finishing knitting on a sweater (at least sleeves left), edging for lace shawl

(The fact that this list seems reasonable to me right now probably explains how I've Ultimate Quested two terms in a row.)

The List, October 2010

Someone over in Hufflepuff House started a "stash" thread, which I was invited (thanks, Steph!) to join. It got me thinking about The List, that magical giant spreadsheet I use to track things started, finished, and just sort of sitting there in any given year. I started The List back in 2001 (at least that's the earliest iteration I can find), and each January 1, I get a fresh start. The Ultimate (and possibly unreachable) goal is to get my works in progress into the SINGLE digits. Under TEN. Yeah, I know, not for a long time. But for 2010, the goal is to get the number of items on The List under 40... and that could happen. Stats for the year: projects started and finished: 74; projects finished total, 83; projects started and not finished, 6. I have a really, REALLY long commute, and have decided housework is a waste of time - that's how I manage so much crafting time.

So, here it is. The List, as it stands at the end of October, 2010, all 47 items-in-progress. As you can see, I tend to cling to projects once I've started them. That needs to change. There are some things on this list that I'm never going to finish, and I need to just Let Them Go. (This is different from the ones I can't find; they'll turn up. Possibly when I start getting rid of the other, never-to-be-completed, projects.) Some aren't worth finding new homes for; some I'll give away via the Ravelry groups for the associated "started - anyone want to finish?" threads. But here's the list, right now. (Any photos are the most recent ones I could find on Photobucket; most projects are beyond the point in the photo.)

I think I'm most of the way through the WfS mermaid, and have about 1/3 of the tail of MotP done. And, of course, I'm changing the hair on one and the face on the other to make it seem that they're running from danger. (Why, I'm not sure; the idea appealed to me when I started stitching.)

Quilt Block Exchange Quilt	2004	Various	I did a quilt block exchange in (I guess) 2004, and got some lovely squares. Not everything was done to the specified size, however, so a lot of work re-sizing things with brightly-colored strips needs to be done. It'll happen. Someday.

Dragonfly Window	2005	Lisa Bolger	I love, love, love Lisa Bolger's designs. This is all worked in cotton, since when I got it, I was reacting poorly to needlework wool. I was trying to come up with different textures for each part, and got stuck on the leaves. I've since decided that they'll be done, flat out, in wool, since I can deal with it now. This will get finished.

Stained Glass Peacock Kit	2007	Dimensions	Annoying, since it was hard to track down, didn't come with the main blue color, and is printed slightly off-kilter. Will finish it thought, because it's (a) a peacock and (b) could actually be stained glass.

Yeah, I think I'll definitely let some of these things go - and try to finish up the rest. I'll try to find everything by the end of November (because I'll want a break from NaNoWriMo, and cleaning out the stash room is equivalent to vacuuming the cat as "things to do to not deal with writer's block"), and knock things off the list as I find them. I'm also going to attempt to get a "current" photo of everything on The List, too. That should be... um... an adventure!!
